Everything you need to drink well on both sides of the Queen Isabella Causeway.
Happy Hours on South Padre Island & Port Isabel, TX
For anyone driving down from McAllen, Edinburg, Harlingen, or anywhere in the Valley, the stretch from Port Isabel to the far end of South Padre Island is the best concentrated drinking destination in South Texas. Fifty-plus bars across two connected cities, a causeway that separates them by five minutes, and a coastal atmosphere you can’t replicate anywhere else in the RGV.
The problem has always been logistics — knowing which bars are open, when happy hour runs, and how to sequence the night without wasting time on dead ends. That’s exactly what this guide solves.
South Padre Island: What to Know
SPI’s bar scene runs the full length of Padre Blvd — about 7 miles from the southern tip up through the resort hotels at the north end. The sweet spot for walking between bars is the lower stretch, from Palm St south to around 2nd Street, where Louie’s Backyard, LongBoard Bar & Grill, Tequila Sunset Bar & Grill, and Liam’s Steak House & Oyster Bar sit close enough together to move between on foot. Mid-island pulls more locals — Laguna BOB, Padre Island Brewing Co, Harry’s Bar. Further north: Rockin’ Cigar Bar & Grill at 3rd Coast, Bar Louie, and Clayton’s Beach Bar.
Padre Island Brewing Co is your craft beer anchor — brewed on-site. SPI Wine Bar is a genuine wine bar, surprisingly sophisticated for a beach island. Kelly’s has confirmed happy hour in our system — $2 Lonestar from 11 AM to 7 PM daily. As more SPI venues claim their listings, happy hour specials will appear directly in the finder above.
Port Isabel: Smaller, Cheaper, More Authentic
Port Isabel doesn’t get the press SPI does, and that’s exactly what makes it worth knowing. Eight bars in our directory — every one with regulars who’ve been coming for years. Joe’s Oyster Bar is a genuine institution: fresh oysters, cold beer, zero pretense, open 11 AM to 7 PM daily. Hopper Haus Bar and Grill runs 11 AM to midnight. J & Bubba’s Bar & Grill is open until 2 AM daily — Port Isabel’s best late-night option.
How to Plan Your Night: The Causeway Route
Arrive Port Isabel in the late afternoon, hit Joe’s for a round of oysters and drinks, then cross the Queen Isabella Causeway to SPI right around happy hour (4–6 PM is the sweet spot). Walk the lower Padre Blvd strip, grab dinner at one of the waterfront spots, and let the night take you north. Late-night options like Montana’s The Kraken, Coral Reef Lounge, and Louie’s Backyard run until 2 AM for anyone not ready to head back to the Valley.
For more on what’s happening on the island year-round, South Padre Island’s official tourism site keeps event calendars and seasonal guides. And when you’re ready to explore happy hours across the rest of the Rio Grande Valley, RGV Happy Hour covers every city from McAllen to Brownsville.
